Hello! I'm Jason Ruddy, UX/UI designer, specialising in creating awesome experiences on web and mobile devices.

Working both agency and client side, I’ve worked across a broad range of big brands and sectors over the past 16 years. I am currently contracting as a Senior UX/UI Designer for a variety of clients.

PlayStation year-end wrap-up

Much like Spotify and competitors such as XBOX, PlayStation have been offering users the opportunity to see their year in gaming. This is mainly a round-up of how many hours they have spent playing, most played games and trophies they have acquired for their efforts during the year. I was lead designer for the project and used our new branding as a starting point to bring the project inline with our PS5 launch.

In previous years we had tried different visual approaches which I personally felt were too busy and took away from the stats that players were more interested in. With this in mind I opted for clean, minimal layouts with emphasis on the players unique stats. All this was brought together with animated transitions between sections and loading animations for each stat revealed as the user scrolls down the page.

Playstation Email Redesign

To coincide with the launch of PS5 in November 2020, PlayStation rolled out a global identity for their email offering. I was sole designer for the project, with the task to create an instantly recognisable brand email which would work across all our services and campaigns. Using the new branding I designed mobile first, keeping imagery at the forefront of each layout.

An important aspect of the design was also the reuse of components and modules so that we could automate our email comms without the use of a designer. I created a library of reusable modules. These could then be sufficiently adapted to accommodate additional sections or pages should their remit grow. This was an interesting part of the brief as it meant that the design had to both fulfil the visual criteria but also be scalable from a build and content point of view.

PlayStation App

I was Lead Designer on the latest PlayStation App release. The entire app has been reimagined to enhance the gaming experiences on both PS4 and PS5. The app was designed to work hand in hand with the console UI and UX, making use of all it's features and giving the user the functionality to purchase and download games and to be able to stay in touch with friends - two features that were originally separate apps and are now combined into the PS App.

To date, the PlayStation App has racked up 100 million installs on the Google Play Store alone. The app will continue to evolve as we see how users use it as their go to companion app for their console.

PS5 Experience - Marketing page journey

With PS5 seven months into its lifecycle, I created a conceptual design using the latest hardware and software assets that have become available. In this exploration, I wanted to convey a journey which the user would experience best on mobile. This would involve animated transitions between sections, using video backgrounds and motion graphics to create seamless narrative from hardware to software.

I've also played with pushing the PlayStation brand to be more playful by using bold typography to make titles and messaging more impactful and using the infamous PlayStation shapes to add texture and as image portals in slick and dynamic ways.

PlayStation Studio franchises

With the launch of PS5, PlayStation announced that all of its first party studios now operates under the PlayStation Studios banner. In turn we were keen to transfer all external microsites to PlayStation.com. As Lead UX/UI Designer, I created a coherent way to keep each franchise unique, using its key art and brand, whilst allowing PlayStation brand UI to exist alongside it. The franchise pages will also all follow the same structure, so users will have a familiar and consistent journey across any franchise they explore.

I undertook research into gaming sites to see what type of design and content was common and how we could adapt the existing site to better present the game franchise.Following this I made a number of suggested changes to the site. These ranged from navigation changes to allow players to more easily find what they were looking for, to visual and technical updates to make the pages feel more engaging with newer game assets that had become available.

PlayStation Remote Play app

The Remote Play app allows you to stream your PlayStation games from your console (PS5 or PS4) to your phone, tablet, laptop, desktop device. I was lead designer on the app and opted for a clean, minimal user interface due to the nature of the product.

It was important to keep the user journey as simple as possible. Remote Play gives the user the functionality of a second screen, so connecting to their console needs be efficient and seamless. So I kept the steps to a minimum where I could, so the user could pick up and play with no fuss.
